I'm excited to be getting my work "out there" to you this way. The prices of books just keeps skyrocketing, due in large part to the costs involved in producing and promoting a novel. A publisher needs to spend a shit-ton of cash to get work out to stores and reviewers, etc., then has to do it all over again once the book is finally out there to get people to buy it. And, of course, the cost for that is passed on to the reader/audience.
Although I personally think my work is priceless (and so does my mom), I'm very happy being able to get my books out to the people who want to read them at a fair price that works for both me and the reader.
But beyond that, because of easy connectivity these days, it's cool that instead of just being a transaction between bookseller/bookbuyer, this direct method fosters community. We'll run into each other online, exchange ideas - just be gentle if you think my writing sucks. My mom would definitely disagree.
